Netflix is gearing up to make a movie based on a popular lottery game in both the United States and Latin America. The film, titled Loteria will star actor and comedian Eugenio Derbez, known for his voice work in Angry Birds 2 and on titles such as Instructions not Included and Dora and The Lost City of Gold.
The plot will centre around the popular Don Clemente card game and will serve as a means for Derbez to reconnect with his children after discovering a pack of old playing cards. Loteria, also known as the Mexican Bingo game is based on a 15th-century Italian game involving a series of cards and bean counters. The film is set to be family-friendly, with the story symbolising a way of overcoming struggles in family relationships.
This isn’t the first movie to involve a lottery system. In 2010 a movie titled Lottery Ticket was released to mixed reviews. The plot involves an aspiring young man living in the projects who buys a lottery jackpot and has to survive a three-day weekend after neighbourhood thugs discover he’s holding the winning lottery ticket worth $370 million.
Earlier this year a movie titled “Two Lottery Tickets” was released to moviegoers in Romania. A road trip buddy comedy that sees three friends splitting the proceeds on a €6 million euro winning lottery ticket.
